From Kirkus Reviews-
Useful with an idea that's developed with care and intelligence. Trivas'
freely rendered art portraying this happy family of three is upbeat and attractive.
This timely story
celebrates the rich cultural heritage and lifestyle of a mixed-race child. The narrator
enumerates qualities inherited from her parents--a face that's "a little dark, a
little light", somewhere between Mama's "chestnut brown'' and Papa's fair skin;
hair that's "halfway in-between'' blond and black.
Subsequent pages show different
family members with purely individual likes and dislikes, so that the readers move beyond
race to simple preferences.
The illustrations are fun and lively, catching the playful
mood of this just-right family.
Definitely recommended, especially for reading
aloud at home or in the classroom.
Also great as a springboard for conversations about
race with even the youngest children.
