About the Book

This story is actually an adaptation of the Iraqi folktale "The Little Red Fish and the Clog of Gold".

Cinderella is a beautiful young girl named Maha, the fairy godmother is a benevolent fish, the ball is a bride’s “grand henna” and, of course, the glass slipper is a golden sandal. This time, Maha actually begs her father to remarry, and against his better judgment, he does. As would be expected, once married, Maha’s new stepmother changes. Interestingly, the princely merchant and Maha meet only after the merchant’s mother combs the town for the girl who fits the sandal. In keeping with historical Iraqi culture, the wedding couple meets for the first time at the wedding party.

Definitely recommended for it’s cultural insights.
